Torrey Pines Municipal Golf Course On October 4, the USGA awarded the 2008 U.S. Open Golf Tournament to Torrey Pines Golf Course. It will be the first time the Open has been played at Torrey Pines and USGA tournament coordinators estimate the South Course at Torrey Event organizers and officials estimate having the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines will rank as one of the area's most lucrative sporting events ever, bringing millions of dollars to the local economy. They also feel that play on a municipal golf course makes a strong statement about the game of golf in America, with Torrey Pines serving as an example of a quality course that makes for an invitation to the public to both observe and play the game of golf. Torrey Pines can hold as many as 40,000 golf fans per day. Torrey Pines opened in 1957, and offers two 18-hole championship courses-the North and South courses. Both courses test a player's skill with rough, lush fairways, as well as trees, bunkers, sand and often challenging maritime weather conditions. On the South Course, there are seven holes with direct views of the Pacific Ocean, a hundred yards below the links, and several more with views of a huge natural coastal canyon with the nearby southern California Mountains almost always in the background. The North Course offers several holes that are situated high atop the beachside bluffs overlooking the expansive coastline. The south course is now an impressive 7607 yards in length, the Torrey Pines South Course has been selected to host the prestigious 2008 United States Open Championship. |
