Royal Liverpool Ready's for The British Open A change to the numbering of the holes at Royal Liverpool this year means that the 135th British Open Championship will finish on what has traditionally been Hoylake's challenging 16th green. The adjustment to the order of play will make the 560-yard par five the closing hole and the 17th and 18th holes will be played as the first and second. The course has been lengthened by 122 yards since the Amateur Championship was played over the historic links is 2000, and will be 263 yards longer than the last British Open held at Hoylake in 1967. The 18th will present a birdie opportunity, but as a left to right dog-leg with out of bounds ever present on the right, will also be a hole for potential disaster. Before knowing that The British Open would be returning, Royal Liverpool had foresight in exercising a strategic review of the entire course aimed at improving the flow from green to tee while also tightening up tee-shots, bunkering and the greens. Historic British Open winners at Royal Liverpool Over a span of 70 years the winning scores in Open Championships at Royal Liverpool dropped from 314 to 278, from an average of 78.5 per round to 69.5. The biggest move came in the six years between the victories of Walter Hagen in 1924 with a winning total of 301 and Bobby Jones' grand slam year of 1930 when he captured The Open title with a score of 291. Peter Thomson's four round aggregate of 286 in 1956 was lowered by eight shots when Roberto de Vicenzo won the last Open to be played at Hoylake with 278 in 1967. In the third round that year Vicenzo set the lowest Open round over the course with a 67, a score also matched by Gary Player. The first Open winner at Hoylake was amateur Harold Hilton, a Royal Liverpool member, in 1897. It was his second Open title, having won the first four-round Championship at Muirfield in 1892. He also won the Amateur Championship four times and in 1911 became dual Amateur champion of both Britain and America. |
