Lorena Ochoa of Mexico Enhances Women's Golf in the U.S. While Michelle Wie, Natalie Gulbis and Paula Creamer tend to take center stage when
it comes to media attention, Lorena Ochoa, the talented young golfer from Guadalajara,
Mexico is quietly winning top professional LPGA tournaments. Ochoa,
a graduate of the University of Arizona is taking the LPGA by storm.
Her modest manner combined with an unflappable poise and talent has kept her
in many top ten tournament finishes this year. She won handily at the Kraft
Nabisco and the now the Sybase Classic. Ochoa has been responsible a for
re-energized golf fever in her home country of Mexico as she has created countless
new fans as a result of her success. Her fans, both in Mexico and
the United States often travel tour events to watch her play and participate in
her cheering fairway galleries. According to the LPGA website, women's golf in Mexico has had an affect on many children. Ochoa created a foundation that helps those who don't have the economic resources to continue to study the game or for those who have terrible diseases. The foundation collects donations by organizing golf clinics and tournaments. So as you can see, Lorena has a real connection with her country and she has done so much for the sport of golf that in 2001, she was awarded the Mexican Sports Award. She became am LPGA rookie in 2003. Lorena Ochoa is a class act and just what the LPGA needed. Viva Lorena! |
The Ladies Professional Golf Scene Is Sparking New Interest New high profile rookies and high performance veterans have brought new life to the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) tour events across the United States and abroad. Consistent LPGA tournament victories by Annika Sorenstam have produced a fan and sponsor following similar to that of Arnie's army in the 1960's. Combine the proven talent and tournament victories of Annika Sorenstam with young upstarts like Morgan Pressel, Michelle Wie and Paula Creamer and you have a recipe for rekindled interest in the LPGA. Other media darlings and talented golfers include Lorena Ochoa, Grace Park and Natalie Gulbis. |
The 2006 LPGA golf season should bring plenty of suspenseful performances by these
new ladies of golf as they all set their sights on stealing some of Annika Sorenstams
well earned spotlight. Can they do it? Not if Annika has something
to say about it. If anything, it appears as though all of the new
kids on the golf course have energized the reigning LPGA champion. Sorenstam
has continued to put up some of the best scoring averages in tour history.
That is not likely to change anytime soon. |
